Barbie Research

The first barbie was released in 1959. She had 36-inch bust line paired with a minuscule 18-inch waist. So from there first product they were selling a completely un realistic doll. Within the first commercial the first line of the video is "Barbie you're beautiful" this suggests from the very start of the business they are selling a product which is suggested as 'beautiful'. It then goes on to show them in glamorous beautiful dresses, this again is suggesting that if you look similar to them you can
lead a glamorous and beautiful life. All the barbies on the video have the same skin and figure. This suggests that there is not any room for anyone who does not fit there "clique". At the end of the one of the dolls is in a wedding dress this again gives a lot of girls the impression you can only look beautiful in a dress if you are stick thin. The whole way through it gives you the feeling its an inclusive group and it gives you the feeling you can be involved if you look similar.
The next commercial bought out was Kens first commercial. Very simply it just showed them "falling" in love at first sight. This is again giving small girls a sense of something that is not true. I believe they did this to make it sell able to girls who believed they would have a fairy tale like Ken and Barbie. Forward from this I started looking at from those first barbies to how they are now. As you can see below barbie was made slimmer in 2000. This again shows the more immense pressure that is sold with a barbie.

From research I found a guardian article named "why I won't be buying my daughter a barbie at christmas"
Looking further than the sexualisation of barbie she starts to talk about how barbie's ambitions. I really liked how within this people see that Barbie is trying to change within society but deep down the morals are the same within the company.
